Perfect for Christmas Eve baskets and midnight feasts

Grantham Gingerbread is the oldest commercially traded biscuit in the history books of the UK. There is no other biscuit recipes that predates this one. It was first baked in Grantham way back in 1740 by local baker William Egglestone. it was by all counts created in error but the mistake that popped out of the oven was such a success with William's customer it soon became a local delicacy. Fast forward 280years and Hawkens Grantham Gingerbread, still made to the same original recipe, remains a delicacy and is sought after the country over and over seas. It is a white gingerbread as the recipe does not contain treacle which gives gingerbread it typically dark character. It is an all butter biscuits which gives it the richness of the high quality biscuit that it is. Its gentle crackle, honeycomb centre and mild and gently warming ginger flavour really makes this a gingerbread biscuit of character. The attractive carton in which these superb biscuits are carefully packed is unusually printed on the reverse side of the board to give a less glossy and more muted finish to reflect the heritage and history of the recipe. We have used our Hawkens Gingerbread brand red for the ink on the carton which really gives this handsome box some festive  presence and a truly high quality feel. The interesting story of Grantham Gingerbread is printed on the side panel.

Flour (WHEAT), sugar, butter (MILK), vegetable fat (palm, rapeseed, sunflower), golden syrup, black treacle (SULPHITES), EGG, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder (WHEAT), ground ginger (1%), salt,
